To save the planet, environmentalists and companies find ways to reduce the amount of garbage, especially plastic wastes, we produce. There are now biodegradable plastic bags available in the market, but edible bags? Isn’t that insane!
EnviGreen is the company behind this genius innovation. Ashwath Hegde, an entrepreneur born in Mangalore, is the founder of this company. They produce 100% organic, biodegradable, and eco-friendly bags.
He had this idea when the Mangalore City Corporation implemented a ban on the production and use of plastic bags in 2012. That time there wasn’t any alternative for the plastic bags, except those expensive bags that people had to purchase. Ashwath heard the people’s concerns, which led him to creating the his company’s organic bags.
Ashwath is now based in Qatar. After years of research, he came up with the formula for creating EnviGreen’s bags that are solely made with organic materials such as starch and vegetable oil.
The company’s bags look like real plastic bags, which are also as durable. But do not be deceived. These bags are edible and toxic free!
EnviGreen’s bags are made with 12 ingredients including potato, tapioca, corn, natural starch, vegetable oil, banana, and flower oil. How the bags are made is far different from the process of creating plastic ones.
The company’s bags were even subjected to tests to make sure they are plastic-free! The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) examined the bags, and found out it’s free from plastic materials, thus approving it for use.
The bag when soaked in room temperature water dissolves within a day. When placed in a boiling water, will dissolve in 15 seconds. And when disposed in a normal surrounding will dissolve in less than 180 days!
EnviGreen’s bags wouldn’t only be useful for the people or the environment, but also to animals that ingest plastic materials. These edible bags will save millions of lives, most importantly, it will help preserve the beauty of our planet.
